Valentine’s day is coming. It’s the season of love, to love and be loved.

A long time ago, then lived a certain catholic priest who was named Saint Valentinus. This is probably a common story already but I’d say it anyway.

Different legends contend for the veracity of the origin of Valentine’s day but the most popular is the one I’m going to narrate here.

Valentine or Valentinus was said to be a priest who served during the third century in Rome. And since wars were still being fought (have war even ceased yet?), Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men from that time onwards because he observed that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. After all, the reasons seem rather obvious.

ILU AJE (TOWN OF WITCHES): A TOWN IN OYO STATE

But this new law posed a real threat against love and the expression of love. Saint  Valentine who was a priest that believed in love, after realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Maybe at night, who knows?

But it didn’t last so long until Valentine’s actions were discovered. Then Claudius ordered that he be put to death. But this was not easily forgotten by people and thence the celebration of love on Valentine’s day.

Another side of the legend insists that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, that the holiday was named after. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome. But we do not know which fight of love this bishop fought though.

The first legend above is still the most popularly accepted legend that seeks to explain the origin of Valentine’s day. However, one last story exists.

Some long years ago, Christians were tortured by the Roman Empire and Valentine (maybe another one) was noted to have been killed in the attempt to help Christians escape the harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. These legends are becoming exhausting really, but there is yet one last one.

According to this last legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting, after he fell in love with a young girl—possibly his jailor’s daughter—who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine”, an expression that is still in use today.

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and—most importantly—romantic figure

Now, what does it mean to be someone’s valentine? When you say to your Val, “be my Val”, what exactly does that mean?

What It Means To Be Someone’s Valentine

It is important to understand what it means to be someone’s valentine. When you receive that card with the romantic message and the calligraphic inscription, “Be My Val”, what is the hidden message behind the request?

Many people take Valentine so casually without understanding the intents of those who ask them out to be their Valentine. There’s a hidden message behind those words “be my Val”, but very few people know that.

Valentine has become a time when people freely engage in acts of Sex with someone they have never done it with before, it has become a time to explore new sexual opportunities, but was that how it always was?

The Hidden Message Behind “Be My Val”

Valentine’s day has become one of the best days to ask a girl bearing gifts with you. It’s a time to express your inner emotions towards someone you have been in love with but has not been bold enough to say.

However, because of lack of this understanding, most people who receive this Valentine’s gift forget why the sender is sending them in the first place. Now what is that hidden message?

Let’s see some hidden messages behind “be my valentine. The primary message behind” be my valentine is as follows:

*I love you and I want you to be my partner

I Love You And I Want You To Be My Partner

You may not realize it but this is one hidden message behind the request Be my Val. When a guy asks a girl to be his Val, he is asking for a date out with her on February 14, which is Valentine’s Day. But he also wants that to be the start of a fresh new relationship with her.

When you are asked out for Valentine, your response will indirectly indicate your relationship status. If you say you already have a Val, it means they are potentially not single and if they agree, then they are available. This is something he or she may have been dying to find out ever since, but here comes the easy opportunity.

More than 80% of Valentine’s dates are just temporary, except with already existing partners. But, Valentine’s day could have been a perfect day to find relationship partners, you know?

“Be my valentine” is actually another way of saying “I have been in love with you and I want to start a romantic relationship with you”. But little did you imagine that it was beyond just one day.

Other Hidden Meanings To “Be My Valentine”

As the celebration evolved, many other things evolved with it. I’m pretty sure Valentine’s day is not celebrated the same way it was celebrated in the days of its beginning. But what has changed? There are other hidden meanings in the phrase “be my Val” and here are a few of them:

I want to f**k you, give me a chance

Let’s just have fun, no strings attached

Hey, come on. I want this friendship to get stronger and we are both single

The major point here is that Valentine’s day could have been a perfect opportunity for the shy ones to find love. But now we see that it has also presented another big opportunity for other things as well. Now, how do you identify the intention of that person asking you to be his/her Val?

How Do I Identify The Hidden Message In The Request

Identifying the hidden message behind the request to be someone’s Val is very important. This is because if you accept naively without knowing their intentions, you may encounter something unexpected that you are not comfortable with. And secondly, you could miss an opportunity to find love with someone who truly loves you.

There are several stories on the media about valentine partners who ended their date fighting. One of the partners have given the gifts and the other was expected to reciprocate with something the first partner desired, maybe sex or consent to move on together as a couple.

To avoid these problems, it is important to first identify the intent behind the very request, “be my valentine”. Here are some ways you can identify the intent;

  1. Ask specific questions
  2. Declare your relationship status
  3. Accept gifts courteously and gift them in return

Ask Specific Questions

Asking specific questions will help clarify the intent of whoever is asking you out on a Valentine’s date. Simple questions like “does this mean something between us”, “what happens after Valentine’s day”, “where are we going to have the date”, etc, can help clarify the intention of the person asking you put.

Declare Your Relationship Status

Sometimes, your boyfriend or girlfriend may not be in town on Valentine’s day and you could be forced to celebrate it with someone entirely different. Someone else is coming to ask you out for the date, and you are not sure what their expectations are? Declaring to them that you have a partner could put them into their rightful position and lower their expectations for the date. This, however, may turn them off and make them withhold their subsequent gifts from you or may force them to reduce what they give to you for valentine, but it would save you from some unexpected outcomes later that day.

Accept Gifts Courteously and Gift Them In Return

Anyone can give you gifts on valentine’s day. It’s a day about showing love by gifting, isn’t it? So when everyone gets gift, nobody expects anything more.

Gifts more commonly flow from the guys to the ladies, but it could go the other way round. When you receive gifts, be thankful and appreciative and if you can, send them your own parcel too. Turning down gifts because you are not sure of the intent is not a great move on Valentine’s day, rather, you should receive your gifts courteously and if you have nothing else to give back, a good “thank you” would do.

Conclusively, valentine’s day is a day of love, to show and receive love. If you have a partner, show some special love. I mean, do something different for them. And before we get to February 14, 2021, let me be the first to ask you to be my Valentine. But I hope you know my intent before responding?

Show some love if you enjoyed this post. Happy Val in advance.
