WAR - BY SHALOM SANGOBOWALE
They said those who want peace
Must prepare for war
Because life is a battle ground.
How could I have understood such words?
I’ve never had to beg for anything,
Never had to suffer,
Never had to take no from anyone
Or anything
But just how long was it going to take?
To realize that they were actually right
And that nothing ever comes
Without struggles,
Without hurdles,
Without obstacles.
Life is a major battlefield…
Momma told me a story
About two kinds of people
And how they differ.
She said I’d understand when
I’m older.
These people she told me about
Were involved in a battle
Caught between the two greatest forces
That exists in this world – good and evil.
Momma said whatever is done on earth
Comes back to the doer.
But the prompter is first of all the mind.
She said ‘The mind is no battlefield,
It’s a war zone and we are fighters
In unique ways’.
She taught me the power of thoughts, Words and choices.
These she said are the most important weapons people fight with.
She also told me that there are other factors
Outside the mind that threatens
To steer the war.
Momma said nobody has it totally easy.
Those who have things going good for them
Didn’t attain the height by folding arms.
They got better by constantly fighting
Fighting the demons that sometimes make us imperfect
Demons that threaten to forge us
The little soldiers that escaped the garden
Of background and circumstances.
She reminded me of good and bad
They fight each day to make the right choices
And pick themselves up
When they turn the wrong direction.
These people just never give up
