TURNING YOUR PAINS INTO YOUR POWER

Compiled by: OJEME ISIOMA

Growing up for me was terrible as I had to live with the pains of watching my mother and father shout at each other every day! Watching my mother scream at my father in defense and my father threatening to hit her was painful for me and my siblings! The pain of not knowing what went wrong, who was wrong and who was right overwhelmed me. The pain of having to make sensitive decisions on my own at a very young age due to the fact that my parents were too busy shouting at each other. The pain of not knowing where to go, who to follow when they were about to separate. I couldn’t stand the thought of not living with my mum, I loved her too much as to watch her leave the house without me, so I followed her. The pain of seeing my eldest brother stare at my parents helplessly and sometimes in tears. The pain of having to always pray but nothing seemed to be working! The heart break I experienced whenever I saw my mother crying, not knowing who to run too. I couldn’t understand why everything was happening the way they did. I never saw my dad as the villain and my mum as the protagonist, neither did I ever see my mother as the devil and my father as the saint. I just loved these two people so much that I did not want to loose them, but more importantly I did not want them to loose each other. Unfortunately, they turned out to become two people who were not compatible for each other, leaving their fruits in pains. This was my endless struggle.

Listen, your story may not be like mine, they might not even be similar. In fact, your struggle may be worse than mine! Yours may be an experience of rape, yours may be depression and addiction, yours may be constant academic failures, yours may be betrayal, heart break, the loss of a loved one, but whatever your story is, I only hope that you can see your story through mine and know that you are not alone!

My childhood was shaped through so many tragedies and the amazing thing about tragedies is that they don’t tell you that they are shaping you. It doesn’t even feel like they are shaping you because all they serve at your table is pains, struggles and difficulties. But can I tell that your struggle makes you stronger? Have you not yet learned that where there is no pain, there is no power? See, pain develops something in you that can only be developed in hard times and that is POWER and that power is gotten from HOPE! Heart beaks, disappointments and failures never leave you the same, they change you! And so, you don’t have to just go through your pains, but grow through them! You cannot loose hope because only then can you become stronger!

Now thinking about it, I realize that my experience has formed my story and my story has become my inspiration! My story is one of the major reasons I am becoming the woman I am becoming today, so what about you? You need to turn your pains into your power and your wounds into your wisdom! See, you do not have to dwell in that past, because there is hope for a better future, all you have to do is to dwell on the past and you say not in spite, but because of your past, you are becoming the man or the woman that you are becoming because that is who you have always known yourself to be! You need to realize that you are so much greater than your circumstances and so you do not have to go through life being a victim! The situation of your past has very little or no power to determine who you become in life!

Pay attention to this; your pains create your greatness and your pains ignite your power! Do not waste your pain by giving up because it is not there to stop you, it is there to propel you. You cannot be relevant if you have not gone and grown through something because you would not have the fortitude to withstand the tough times! Never loose hope because your condition is not your conclusion and your pains should not define you, only let them refine you! I would leave you with a quote by a great man whose greatness and hope were shaped by his pains – Albert Einstein, he said: “only those who can see the invisible can achieve the impossible”
