Up in the hills I hear
The far cry of a country
Beaconed on me to serve
While the mothers scream
Corper ibiala, Corper ibiala
The children sings inde Corper
Then I realised the dancing
Steps of Enugu, the hill
With red eyes and foot
With blanket of cold.
On entering the camp
I heard a loud scream
“You have sold your soul
Not to the devil but to Govt”
Then I smiled not knowing
What that connotes seeing
Beautiful faces decorated
With toothsome smiles
Pants in throng so beautiful
Like the fountain that sprung
From those reddish hills
Capturing every boxer
That passes by like magnet.
Was fun all through the night
In the great river of suffering
Our pains was only ankle deep
But as the day passes by
I hear a different tongue
Far from that of the hills.
“Kai, you all are bukuru people”
To my mind it means we are fine
But on the faces of the soldiers
It was written we are all fools.
Sleep at the tip of our lids
Our minds refused it admittance
Our freedom has been stolen
Like the Ark of God taken away
Waking up earlier after time
Only breeds many with a
Pleasant smell, body odour
And the shelter we sheltered
Gave birth to maradonic men
with chronic sticky fingers
And they were the thieves
Enugu hear I come!
